Neither cross-country skiers nor downhill enthusiasts will leave the northeastern town of Stowe disappointed when snow falls, though this region is equally popular come summer with hikers and paddlers.
Route 108, The Smuggler's Notch Road, was established as a State Scenic Road in 1978 under the Vermont Scenic Roads Law. This scenic route passes through the area of the Mansfield State Forest and its picturesque forests and bold rock outcroppings. There are scenic pullouts and parking areas along this scenic route where rock climbing and hiking are popular activities. Fall is a dramatic season along the byway with the changing of the leaves in the state forest. During the winter months this steep, winding road becomes impossible to plow and is impassable to vehicles but skiers come from alternate routes to cross-country and downhill ski in the Smuggler's Notch Resort.
We offer a compact version of Go-Vermont for mobile users, allowing you to access just the information you need on the road. Of course, you can still use the full version of Go-Vermont on your mobile device just as you can on your desktop.
